WHO IS LOIS GRESH? THE REAL DIRT!

I worked in programming, engineering, and technical writing positions fulltime while writing books and stories fulltime for as long as I can remember. My crazy Schedule from Hell began when I was 17 years old (photo left).

Graduating from high school a year early, I wanted to major in Genetics and/or Biochemistry in college. But fate was not on my side.

I wrote a non-fiction book about poverty at age 16 that netted $2,000 (enough for a year's tuition in those days). A year later (photo right), I compiled and edited a graduate macroeconomics textbook for a Harvard professor.

However, I had one of those infamous Dark Clouds over my head, and some Evil Entity must have descended and cast me into Hell.

Long story short, I was left with no college money, so I got a minimum-wage job at a U.S. government library, where I wrote (and programmed the software to produce) a biweekly medical newsletter for 2 years. I also started attending college 4 nights/week (Genetics, Chemistry), which cost almost everything I earned. Needless to say, the early version of my Schedule from Hell was supplemented by Living Conditions from Hell. On a good day, I could afford to eat half a chunk of mozzarella from the 7-11.

I quickly gravitated toward Assembly, C, machine language, and electronics/engineering. After several years, I switched my studies to Computer Science.

Juggling a fulltime job and college classes 4 nights/week, I also started writing weird science fiction and horror stories. I wrote most of the stories during class. Many sold, which absolutely thrilled me.

Still juggling a fulltime job, college classes 4 nights/week, and what turned into fulltime writing, I had 2 children and transformed into a single mother.

For 15+ years, I was a lead systems analyst and a multimedia director; and for 4-5 years, a senior science writer. I cranked out a lot of software, 200+ technical manuals, 60+ science newsletters, a pile of science brochures, and several science "booklets" ranging from 50 to 100 pages.

Circa 2010, I no longer have the Schedule from Hell.

I'm now very happy and writing what I want -- weird science fiction, thrillers, dark fantasy. I'm no longer juggling 2 fulltime jobs, night college, 2 children, and household responsibilities. Wow, I'm actually having fun! It's about time!
